Toomey Syringe In emergency airway management, few things are more important than rapid detection of inappropriate endotracheal (ET) tube placement in the esophagus. A simple but inexpensive device known as the Toomey™ Syringe takes advantage of the structural differences between the trachea and esophagus. The trachea is opened by cartilaginous walls, which remain patent when negative pressure is created by retracting the plunger. This allows air to easily pass through the ET tube and into the Toomey™ syringe. The esophagus has fibromuscular walls, which collapse under negative pressure when the plunger is withdrawn, preventing air from entering the Toomey™ syringe through the endotracheal tube.
