A cold box is an insulated container that can be attached to a ‘conditioned’ ice pack to keep vaccines and fluids cold — but not frozen — during the transport of vaccine supplies from health centers, or to outreach sites. Cold boxes can also be used for short-term vaccine storage once the fridge is exhausted or defrosted, or if the vaccines are transported by the mobile immunization team in vehicles for several days (between two and seven days depending on the manufacturer).

Cold boxes are quite large. A small insulated container called a vaccine carrier can be used. Vaccine carriers are lined with conditioned ice packs for temporary storage during transport from collection stores to health centers or during travel to outreach sites and post-vaccination health sessions. They’re smaller and easier to move around than cold boxes, but they don’t stay cold as long — a maximum of 46-96 hours (depending on the type) with the lid closed.
