16G IV Cannula
16G IV Cannula Invasive short-term use in surgery. – This is a device used to introduce or withdraw fluid from the human circulatory system, consisting of a catheter that is inserted into a blood vessel. A cannula is a thin tube that doctors insert into a person’s body cavity or into a vein. Doctors use them to drain fluids, administer medications, or deliver oxygen. Cannula is a small plastic tube, usually inserted into a vein in your hand or arm.
An IV is used to:
- Provide fluids when you are dehydrated or cannot drink anything
- Give a blood transfusion
- Administer medications directly into your bloodstream. Some drugs work well this way.
- Sometimes there is an IV option. You can discuss possible options with the staff looking after you. But some treatments can only be given, or are best given through an IV.
- A person can use intravenous (IV) and nasal cannulas both in the hospital or at home.
There are two main types of cannulas:
- IV cannulas: IV cannulas are short, flexible tubing placed by doctors into a vein.
- Nasal cannula: Nasal cannula consists of flexible tubes that sit inside the nose and deliver oxygen.
Method of using 16G IV Cannula:
- The methods of using an IV cannula are as follows:
- They will ask the person to lie down or sit with one arm open and extended by their side.
- They will select an insertion point on the person’s arm. This will usually be the person’s non-dominant side and will involve an area where the person’s veins are clearest.
- They will clean this area with an alcohol wipe.
- They will tie a tourniquet above this area. A tourniquet is a band that doctors tie tightly to limit blood flow. It may feel uncomfortable, and the doctor or nurse will leave it on for about a minute.
- They will tell the person that they will feel a pinch, and they will insert the needle into the vein.
- The needle only serves to pierce the skin and vein so that the cannula can be inserted into the vein. Once in the vein, the needle is withdrawn as the cannula slides over the needle and into the vein.
- The cannula is then secured with medical tape or a dressing, such as a wrap or special bandage.
- The only pain associated with inserting an IV cannula is a scratch as the needle penetrates the skin. Iv Cannula Insertion
